I love reading and believe that connecting with a character can be a powerful experience. I especially enjoy reading stories with well-written, authentic Deaf or hard-of-hearing characters.

What I will do:

I will read your story, whether it's a few paragraphs, a short story, or a full-length novel, and share my thoughts on the character. I'll provide a document reviewing the character and their experiences. If any changes are needed, I'll offer suggestions for improvement.

What is a Deaf Sensitivity Reader?

A Deaf sensitivity reader reviews written works to ensure that Deaf characters, culture, and experiences are portrayed accurately, respectfully, and without harmful stereotypes. They focus on the language, behavior, and cultural elements in the story, making sure they authentically represent the diversity and complexity of the Deaf experience. This also involves understanding social interactions within the Deaf community and how Deaf people interact with the hearing world. Sensitivity readers can spot areas where a story may unintentionally reinforce stereotypes, such as depicting deafness as a tragedy or something that needs to be "fixed," and offer suggestions for more nuanced, positive representations that better reflect the real-life experiences of Deaf individuals.

 

Why hire me?

I am a Deaf individual who grew up using both ASL and spoken English. I've worn hearing aids my entire life and was mainstreamed in school, where I had ASL interpreters. I am active in the Deaf community, and ASL is my primary language.

Pricing:

• Short Story (under 10,000 words): $50 flat rate

• Full Length Novel (under 100,000 words): $200

Collaborative Sensitivity Reads:

I have done collaborative reads with K.T. James (deaf author and reviewer) to offer a combined sensitivity read. If you are interested in this approach, feel free to let me know.

Payment Terms:

For short stories, the full payment is due up front. For full length novels, a deposit of half the payment is required upfront. Payment is non-refundable unless I am unable to complete the reading.
